Bird Walks at Wildlife Refuge - 2nd Sunday
Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge
On the second Sunday of every month, you can take a guided bird hike with Audobon Society walk leaders.
You can check out binoculars and also share the walk leaders spotting scope.
Meet a 9am - at HBNWF visitor center 1020 Ranch Rd in Loleta. Bird walks usually last an hour and a half to two hours and cover a distance of about two miles. It's free and beginners are welcome.
And mark your calendars:
One of the most stunning events happens repeatedly in February and March, when once endangered Aleutian cackling geese descend in the thousands and even tens of thousands. The morning fly off has became a draw to the refuge as flock after flock after flock careen toward grassy fields. The Center opens early on these special occasions, please call for specific dates.
Directions: To reach the refuge, take the Hookton Road Exit off Highway 101 about four miles south of Fields Landing. Turn right at the end of the off-ramp onto Eel River Drive and left again immediately onto Ranch Road, where a large sign directs you to refuge headquarters 1.5 miles from the highway exit.
